The neck pillow. The travel-size toiletries kit. A “good luck!” card signed by twelve people who barely spoke to them all year. After all my complaining about bad gifting 😂 — a farewell deserves better than airport-shop energy.
Problem was never the neck pillow itself. Problem is that it says nothing about the person leaving, or what they’re actually taking with them.
Someone moving away is leaving a place that means something. The gift should honour that — not just wish them luck on the flight.
Pick #1: the city they’re leaving
A map of the place they’re leaving behind — their hometown, this city, wherever it is they’ve built a life — so wherever they land next, a piece of home is already on the wall. See the map poster →
Other ideas, honestly
- A memory jar or book from everyone who worked with or knew them here.
- A handwritten letter from the whole group, not just a group card.
- A care package of things they’ll actually miss — specific snacks, specific smells, not generic “India” merchandise.
- A short video compilation of messages from people who couldn’t say goodbye in person.
- A practical starter-kit item for their new city — something useful, chosen with them in mind.
- Help them settle in — an offer that’s actually specific and actionable, not just “let me know if you need anything.”
For the city they’re leaving: try Bangalore, Pune, Chennai, Kolkata, or wherever it is.
